A review of the Tiffen Filter ND & ND/polarizer kit for the DJI Mavic Mini drones is now available. When ND filters were first released for the DJI Mavic Mini, they were impractical because the DJI Fly app did not make it possible to change the shutter speed when capturing video, which meant that the drone would automatically change the settings. An update addressed that problem and the Tiffen ND & polarizer filter kit for the Mavic Mini is the next solution.
The ND & polarizer filter kit includes six filters, with three ND filters and three polarizer ND filters. Both of these variants of the filters come in ND4, ND8, and ND16 versions. Each filter clips over the lens of the DJI Mavic Mini via an extension bracket that locks firmly to the back of the camera.
By using various amounts of stops, it makes it possible for a neutral-density (ND) filter to limit the amount of light that gets into the camera. One stop limits the amount of light passing through by 50%, and the ND4 filter is the equivalent to two stops of light, which means it has about a quarter of the amount of light that gets into the sensor. Also, the built-in polarizer filter controls reflections and reduces glare.
To ensure that the lenses do not touch anything while in the case and that they won’t move around while being transported, the filters come in a solid plastic housing sitting in a soft foam angled upwards to ensure it stays closed and has a satisfying sound when closing shut. And the case itself uses magnets and is small enough that it can fit in a pocket or a full drone bag.
The filters weigh very little because they are made from a lightweight metal that is flexible but strong. The fastening piece which is attached to the filter with two tiny screws is the most flexible part so that if it happens to be snapped, it will be easy to replace a screw from a less used filter. The polarizer ND filters are sturdy and have a smooth rotatable lens.
The filters effectively limit the amount of light hitting the camera sensor and the glass on the lenses seems to be high quality. The metal housing is also strong without adding weight to the gimbal.
Future
The Tiffen ND & polarizer filter kit for the Mavic Mini provides another solution to the weaknesses that preceded it. It includes six filters, with three ND filters and three polarizer ND filters and these variants of the filters come in ND4, ND8, and ND16 versions that are recommended unless a filter stronger than ND16If is required.
